They call them crazy ants. Tiny little things, almost invisible. If they ever infest your home you’ll understand why the name. Any disturbance near them sends them into wild frenzies of meaningless activity. Dashing about in circles, running into one another, looking like a scene from Keystone Cops. Behind the madness, however, lies a genius for survival that will challenge the most experienced exterminator. As I watch one of them crawling across my monitor screen just now, it’s like an announcement that, “They’re back.” Their ubiquitous presence reminds of a short piece entitled, “Leiningen vs. The Ants,” by Carl Stephenson.
